The Tunnel of Roses

Coming Spring of 2016

The Tunnel of Roses will be placed on the grass in between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. What will start as a beautiful creation for all to enjoy, will eventually become a run-down representation of what was. Every day, the natural beauties of our world are being ruined. From the deforestation of the Amazon to the family taking shells from the beach, humans are slowly taking and giving nothing in return. While there are ways to get involved with the maintenance of the Earth, not enough people are aware of the devastation humans are wreaking on this planet. This monument will serve as a wake-up call, a reminder, to let people know that they cannot take from nature and expect the beauty they cherish to remain. The tunnel will initially be covered in roses, and visitors will have the opportunity to pick the roses from the arches if they please. The roses will be intertwined with rotting wood, and once the roses are all gone, the rotting wood, the trampled over grass and the probable litter will be all that remains.

Red and yellow roses will cover the entire monument, both on the inside and outside of the arches. Initially, there will be over a million roses covering the tunnel.

Beneath the roses will be weathered oak lattice. While the roses are still attached to the monument, the old wood will be invisible. However, over time, once the roses are taken or fall off, all that remains will be the extremely rotten and weathered wood.

The inside of the tunnel will also feature roses, and the triangular shape at the end of the tunnel will allow visitors to view the Washington Monument. People can walk through the tunnel, picking roses as they go if they wish.

There will be two plaques for this counter monument: one will be outside the entrance of the tunnel when it first opens and is covered in roses. It will be taken away once all of the roses are gone, and a new plaque will take its place, reminding us that it is not our right to take something just because it is beautiful, and to show the devastation left behind by our desire to attain.
